Neville Muir Comprehensive School for the Disabled (years 7-12+)
Located in Lira, central Uganda, the Neville Muir Comprehensive School for the Disabled, is a vocational school which teaches carpentry, tailoring, hair dressing, building construction, cooking and farming. It also runs classes in computer work, Bible teaching and other subjects. The school currently has over 300 disabled, Deaf, blind, orphaned or very poor young people enrolled, pursuing an education to become self supporting in their adult lives. Dennis himself, the Director of the school, is Deaf, physically disabled, and was once an orphaned street boy.
In 2021, two new dormitories were constructed at the vocational school, capable of housing 80 students in each, and in 2022 extra classrooms were built to cater for the increasing number of students studying at the school.
Self-Sustainability Projects
DMI has provided a van for the Deaf in Uganda to use as a taxi to help build a level of self-sustainability. Deaf Action Uganda has also started several farming projects to provide food for the seminary students, to educate the Deaf in horticulture and provide employment, and to provide an income for the school community.
Ministry in Uganda
DMI has an extensive ministry in Uganda with 20 Deaf churches planted across the country. These churches are supported by a number of evangelists, some of whom travel long distances to minister to the various congregations.
The DMI Bible Training School, located in Kampala, acts as the main training centre for DMI workers in Africa. Students from surrounding countries study in Uganda before returning to their home countries to continue spreading the Good News in their own communities.
Seminaries
Situated in the capital Kampala, this school currently serves as a seminary for the Deaf for all of Africa. Currently 10 students are enrolled, with most living at the school facilities. Many of our graduates go on to evangelical and pastoral work.
This school is one of three seminaries for the Deaf that we plan to develop. A second in Norway is being established to serve the Deaf in Europe and the Middle East. A third is planned for the Philippines where the Deaf from all over Asia can come, receive training in Biblical studies and Christian ministry, and go to serve as evangelists and pastors.
